Note taking and research essay outline

Dear Student,

Research Essay Outline

Every research essay is made up of three parts: introduction, body and conclusion.

The introduction is the first paragraph of the essay. It should begin with a general statement about the topic and end with a more specific statement of the main idea of your essay. The purpose of the introduction is to let the reader know what the topic is about. The introduction should contain your thesis statement [also see Thesis Statement Creator] or the topic of your research as well as the purpose of your study. It informs the reader what you wish to achieve with the paper, what you wish to prove or disprove. You may include here the reason why you chose the particular topic or simply the significance of your research paper title.

The body of the research essay may consist of many paragraphs in which you develop your ideas in detail. Limit each paragraph to one main idea. Do not try to write about more than one idea per paragraph. Prove your points continually by using specific examples and quotations from your notes. Use transition words to ensure a smooth flow of ideas from paragraph to paragraph. Generally, your introduction should state briefly all the major points of your topic your readers will be reading about.

The conclusion is the last paragraph of the paper. Its purpose is to summarize your points, leaving out specific examples. You restate the main idea of the paper, i.e. write again about it in a different way to make the meaning clearer.

The reference list is a part of your research essay. It documents all of the sources that you used for your research. References should be written according to APA format, in alphabetic order. You should list at least five sources; at least two sources should be journal articles or book chapters; others can be online sources. Please do not include more than ten references. References should be printed on a separate page and handed in together with your notes.
