Dear Student,

You are expected to complete the following tasks.

1. Assignments. Total number of marks: 25. You should submit all home and classroom assignments: deadline - 4 p.m. Wednesday, 14 October. If you did not submit so far, please submit them by the end of this week, i.e. before 4 p.m. Wednesday, 14 October; nothing will be accepted after this deadline; please note that only hard copies (printed on paper) will be accepted:

(1) Written assignment "About Myself" (What does your name mean in English?, etc., see page http://academicreadingwriting.blogspot.ae/p/questions.html); - 4 marks.

(2) Lecture notes, i.e. lecture note taking - the topic of the lecture was about note taking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bvsf591rYWE&list=PL19924B8A6D816342; - 4 marks.

(3) Fifty sentences with the academic vocabulary (see page http://academicreadingwriting.blogspot.ae/p/vocabulary.html) - 5 marks.

(6) A summary of The Adventure of the Speckled Band (write about 200 words) - 4 marks.

If you already submitted your assignment, please do not resubmit (do not submit it again). Only those students can submit, if they have a written excuse (letter) from HCT management (supervisor or student affairs office).

2. Extensive Reading: this week, i.e. week 8, during the class time.
Please prepare to discuss with me your extensive reading books. You should read at least twenty pages. It would be best if you could read sixty pages or more. You must bring your book with you. You will be awarded 30 marks if you read 60 pages or more.

3. Paraphrasing. Assessment will be next week, i.e. week 9, 18-22 October. You can be awarded 20 marks for correct paraphrasing.

Please study the following:

(1) methods of paraphrasing and examples
http://academicreadingwriting.blogspot.ae/p/paraphrasing.html;

(2) some online paraphrasing tools - their advantages and disadvantages
BestFreeSpinner http://bestfreespinner.com or FreeBestSpinner http://freebestspinner.com;
CS Generator www.csgenerator.com;
Spinbot www.spinbot.com;

(3) free online dictionaries; you will find many good dictionaries on the left side of the page Free Online Dictionaries: http://thefreedictionaries.blogspot.ae; check them all and choose the ones that you think you would be able to use as effective paraphrasing tools;

(4) make sure you understand how to use Word Document to find synonyms (right-click and find Synonyms).

You will be allowed to use the above tools if you bring your laptop. Your laptop will have to be connected to the Internet and HCT printer (please check these issues with the College IT Office in advance). Also, make sure that your laptop is charged. You will have to print and submit a hard copy of your paraphrased text before the class is finished: print on A 4 paper, font Times New Roman size 11, spaces between the lines 1.15.
